About
It all started when…
I was diagnosed with HIV in 2006. I quickly found myself swimming in a sea of misinformation, isolation, and stigma. It took me some time to find information, not about dying from AIDS, but instead about LIVING with HIV. It also took me awhile to find a doctor that treated me as partner in my health, and to build a trusted support system. At the time I was living in New York City and thought, “if I have had this much trouble coming to terms with my status, what about all of those who never find their way through? Why are we silenced by fear and stigma? Why aren’t more people talking about this?”
What I needed when I was first diagnosed was for someone else to start the conversation. So, when the opportunity to share my experience presented itself, I jumped at it (in spite of fear and knowing that due to stigma I could lose a lot). What developed is an ongoing dialogue- a presentation that I can bring with me to any space, and to any audience. But don’t worry, this isn’t all about my story, instead it’s about initiating the conversation and then opening it up to the audience. Together we craft the beginnings of a conversation that will, hopefully, be carried beyond our time together and that is as unique and special as the audience in attendance. Together we will combat misinformation, empower each other to own our own sexual health, and build a network of support and love.
I’ve also applied my signature style of presentation to other topics, such as LGBTQ+ 101: You’re Role in Creating an Inclusive, Affirming World. Be sure to check that out as well!
